Time Management Strategies: Work Ahead, Checklists, Give Yourself a Break

I'd like to think time management is one of my strengths. I do enjoy planning out my day and have specific things to do at certain times. I think this is the best way for me to stay productive. This is mostly thanks to my really pretty planner from papier

I think my overall strategy this semester is to work ahead, keep a checklist, and to give myself a break every once in a while.

Work Ahead

The best time management strategy is to work ahead. I do sincerely believe that the biggest weakness and challenge for most students is procrastination. Trust me, I have been there and done that. Nothing good comes from procrastination. To motivate myself to work ahead, I like to physically write down on some sticky notes the things I need to do and keep them in my planner.  Creating checklists are great as you have a physical illustration map out of what needs to be done. Lauren Marchese does an excellent job at explaining this in her article: The Psychology of Checklists. There is nothing more satisfying than crossing out the things you have done with a pen (especially a nice thick pen).

Give Yourself a Break

It is important to remember that we are human and we deserve some break. It is great to be productive and to keep tackling tasks, however giving yourself a break can be one of the most productive things you can do for yourself. You have to rest mentally, physically, and even emotionally at times. Especially if you are working or in school full time, having that extra 30 minutes of peace and quiet can be very beneficial.
